OK, I was going to suggest Fiat Chrysler, but that is way worse than anything even FCA is putting out at the moment, so, yeah, its Tesla.

I didn’t see captdale’s post at first, but now that I have I agree. He wins.

But... but... but... they’re just a startup!

Er, even though they’ve been selling cars for 8 years now, that is.

Because good panel fit is a sign of fitting in and we all know TESLA IS DISRUPTING THE AUTO INDUSTRY.

Reliable supply chain, JIT, and implementing quality measures? DON’T GOT TIME FOR THAT WHEN YOU’RE DISRUPTING/HACKING/CO-OPTING THE INDUSTRY.

The Baja SAE car I helped build in college, and yes, I helped make some of the body panels.

We were more concerned with having a working rules-compliant car whose suspension didn’t break, which meant we didn’t have time to address things like the fact we had to take out a frame rail to swap the engine. Or the fact that the shift linkage was at best a “suggestion”.

Lada. And Land Rover (Defender and Series mostly). In my experience...

In fairness, that particular car certainly isn’t the norm for panel fit on a Model X.

Tesla certainly struggles with this issue, but there are other manufacturers that are just as bad

I was going to say Wartburg, because you could fit a slice of toast through those gaps... but at least the gaps are pretty even.

I’m generally a Tesla fan. This is ... really bad. Please tell me these were all pre-production prototypes.

How does panel gap that bad actually happen?

As far as I have heard cars leave the factory this way...

I like the idea, but the cars are too boring for their price. Hence why I would prefer a Fisker Karma

Are we sure this wasn’t in an accident or a prototype?

For about $400 bucks, a Tijuana body shop do a better job fixing a totaled car than this.

I think that doesn’t really count because it doesn’t have panels.

I work on cars for a living and have never seen something so bad. And Most of the Tesla’s I see around have noticeable problems with body alignment. When I can see it in my rearview mirror you know it’s bad.

I’m not trying to be a Tesla hater, I’m just talking about what I’ve seen.

Oh, bro that’s just because it’s so awesome and disruptive it takes a lot of work to keep it going. But it’s okay, I’m part of a new generation of car owners who are changing the world by turning it upside down!

... but at least the gaps are pretty even.

Most people will agree that big, but even, gaps look a lot better than inconsistent gaps of any size.

The worst was probably a Triumph from the 1950s-1960s. They were giving the Soviets a run for their money back then. I’ve seen some you could stick your hand in between the door and the fender. We’re talking gaps that I can’t fathom anyone could have thought were even slightly okay. I question whether they even had QC.

Interestingly, one of the better example pictures came from Jalopnik...
